Wightman Park Green Infrastructure Project

INDUSTRY:
Water and Sewer

LOCATION:
Pittsburgh, PA

CLIENT:
Pittsburgh Water

This project received the 2020 SUSTAINABILITY AWARD from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Pittsburgh Section for integrating stormwater solutions into the redesign of the park. The park will serve the dual purpose of providing recreational activities for nearby residents while also helping to reduce the stormwater impacts this neighborhood commonly experiences.

Wightman Park, located in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, was rehabilitated to create a safer, cleaner, greener, and more accessible space. The area adjacent to Wightman Park has historically experienced surface flooding and basement backups in localized areas due to limited capacity within the existing combined sewer system. The construction of selected green infrastructure improvements is intended to enhance the performance of the combined sewer system and to help reduce basement flooding. As a subconsultant to the lead design firm, Ethos Collaborative, and Construction Manager Hatch, Sci-Tek provided the following services:

  • Geotechnical Subsurface Exploration
    • Ground-penetrating radar investigation to mark subsurface utilities
    • Soil characterization test borings and borehole infiltration tests for proposed green stormwater infrastructure facilities
    • A geotechnical report with conclusions and recommendations
  • Surveying
    • An existing conditions survey including all details of the streets extending to the back of sidewalks; details within ten feet of the right-of-way line; underground utility flags or paint markings; and data on sewer rim/catch basin grate and invert elevations, pipe diameters and materials, and flow directions.
    • A topographic survey drawing to show the details of the features surveyed
  • Construction Management and Construction Inspection (CM/CI)
    • Daily Field Reports
    • Daily photos
    • Contractor observation to document construction in accordance with plans and specifications
