Sci-Tek, on behalf of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, has conducted annual dam inspections for the Midfield Terminal Sedimentation Basin (Dam) and the Taxiway “E” Dam at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

The Midfield Terminal Sedimentation Basin is a soil embankment structure approximately 40 feet in height. It is located across an unnamed tributary to Montour Run.  The basin is designed to provide stormwater detention during significant rainfall events. During dry periods, no water is stored by the basin.

The Taxiway "E' Dam is a soil embankment approximately 90 feet in height with a 2:1 horizontal to vertical slope.  McClarens Run enters the spillway system through a rock-lined channel approximately 120 feet in length.  The dam crest consists of concrete paved taxiways and runways with storm water drainage inlets located in grass vegetated infield areas and are approximately 1,900 feet in width.  Access to the impoundment and intake structure/spillway system is by an existing haul road located on the east side of Taxiway "S".

The dam inspections are conducted in accordance with Pennsylvania Code Title 25, Environmental Resources, Chapter 105, Dam Safety and Waterway Management, Section 105.132, Inspection, and the site’s Permit No. D02 064 Special Condition "A" which requires annual inspections and associated reports.

Sci-Tek has been conducting these inspections annually since 1999.  The reports are certified by a registered professional engineer and submitted to the Division of Dam Safety on or before December 31 of each year.
