INDUSTRY:
Water and Sewer

SERVICES:
Geotechnical, Surveying

LOCATION:
Pittsburgh, PA

CLIENT:
Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority

Sci-Tek provided surveying, geotechnical, and construction support services for the Maryland Avenue Green Infrastructure Project on behalf of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA).  The Maryland Avenue area of the City of Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood has been selected by the PWSA as a priority area for the installation of Green Infrastructure improvements. This area is part of the A-22 Sewershed, which has historically experienced surface flooding and basement backups in localized areas.  Sci-Tek’s scope of work for this project includes the following tasks:

DETAILED TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY OF STREETS AND DRIVEWAYS

  • Performed a field survey and topographic survey of the existing site conditions of the four proposed GSI facility sites comprising approximately 6.5 acres. The survey included:
    • Details on all existing site conditions including all above ground utility appurtenances
    • Data on sewer rim/catch basin grate and invert elevations, pipe diameters and materials, and flow directions
    • Trees, shrubs or tree lines, sewer cleanouts, water valves, and gas valves within 10 feet of either side of the street right-of-way lines
  • Provided supplemental survey services using survey-grade GPS to refine and supplement impervious surface areas and feature locations.

GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES

  • Drilled test borings and performed borehole infiltration testing at planned locations and depths
  • Installed monitoring wells
  • Developed formal Engineer's Logs of the subsurface data
  • Prepared report, which contains conclusions and recommendations based on the data obtained, visual observations, and laboratory test results to support the design of GSI facilities.
