Dooker Hollow Stream Mitigation Project

INDUSTRY:
Water and Sewer

SERVICES:
Civil

LOCATION:
North Braddock, PA

CLIENT:
Allegheny County Sanitary Authority

An acid mine discharge (AMD) from the Grandview Golf Course located in North Braddock, Pennsylvania combines with local runoff and enters a combined sewer, which is tributary to ALCOSAN diversion structure T-01 (Dooker Hollow). In connection with a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Growing Greener Watershed Protection Grant, ALCOSAN retained Sci-Tek to design a system to remove and treat the AMD from the storm sewer. The remediated AMD will be reused as turf grass irrigation water for the golf course and when irrigation water is not needed, it will be piped to a newly constructed municipal storm sewer and discharged to Turtle Creek. A second AMD along Wolfe Avenue was evaluated to determine if it is feasible to have it removed from the collection system and treated and incorporated into the design.

The project involved evaluating the opportunity to design an on-site wind based generator to power the facility. The scope of work included:

  1. Water quality monitoring and sampling
  2. Design of a pump station and piping to convey water to existing irrigation ponds
  3. Design of a storm sewer system to convey AMD to Diversion Structure T-01
  4. Evaluation of opportunities to reduce Inflow and Infiltration
  5. Design of the AMD Treatment Plant
  6. Design of the Wind Turbine
  7. Permit Applications
  8. Project Management and Scheduling

The AMD Treatment Plant and Wind Turbine design was provided by GAI Consultants, Inc., a sub consultant to Sci-Tek.
