Sci-Tek was retained by Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. (JMT) to perform a geotechnical subsurface exploration and associated coordination services for proposed access ports for ALCOSAN Capital Project S429, which involved lining and rehabilitation improvements at various locations throughout the ALCOSAN Interceptor System. Sci-Tek provided the following services:

  • Completion of the Pre-Construction Notification required by the USACE Pittsburgh District’s Nationwide Permit No. 6.
  • Test boring locations with markers on the shore to assist barge positioning.
  • A PA-1 Call for engineering according to PA Act 287, which provided an indication of the presence of subsurface utilities at the sites.
  • Drilling services for three test borings as directed by JMT. Each test boring was drilled from a barge on the Monongahela River, 5 to 10-ft into rock, which is a total depth of 60-ft for each boring. Continuous split-spoon sampling was performed in all test borings to the top of rock. Rock was cored in 5-ft runs.
  • Full-time project representative during drilling who performed the following tasks:
    • Observe that the drilling work is in general conformance with applicable standards.
    • Determine the depth of water and the depth to bottom of riverbed at each boring location.
    • Visually describe and log the soil and rock samples obtained, noting subsurface conditions relative to the type, depth, and distribution of materials encountered. Soil and rock will be logged in the field using a tablet computer and pLog software.
    • Observe Shelby tube samples collected as directed by JMT’s geotechnical engineer.
