Sci-Tek provided site civil design services for a small park at the corner of Penn Avenue and 8th Street in the Cultural District of downtown Pittsburgh. The owner, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, retained GBBN Architects to design the park.
Site design included a hydration station (water fountain), benches, a bike rack location, and grassy areas. A water tap was required to be made on 8th Street for the hydration station and a drain line connection was needed to connect to the 42” diameter sanitary sewer. The water fountain was designed to use 75 gallons per day of water. Sci-Tek provided the following services:
- Topographic and utilities survey
- Coordination of location of water system and flow requirements
- Design Development Phase Services, which included:
- Design calculations for new potable water, sewer, and electric utilities,
- Water tap-in detail and roadway drawing
- Waterline and sewer tie-in applications to submit to Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority
The ½ acre park replaced a paved parking lot and increased the pervious area by 61%. Features incorporated into the park design included grassy areas, trees, shrubs, brick paver sidewalk, a high capacity drinking fountain, bike racks, and benches.
This project received a Regional + Urban Design: Certificate of Merit Award from American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pittsburgh.
