31st Ward Sewer System Improvements Project

INDUSTRY:
Water and Sewer

LOCATION:
Pittsburgh, PA

CLIENT:
Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority

Sci-Tek provided professional engineering, surveying and consulting services for proposed site facility infrastructure within the 31st Ward on behalf of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA). PWSA currently owns and operates two sanitary sewer pump stations that convey flows from the 31st Ward sewershed to the Streets Run Sanitary Trunk Sewer. Both sewage pump stations and force mains were constructed in the late 1940’s and have experienced an increase in failures in recent years. Additionally, PWSA desires to reduce the amount of infiltration/inflow entering the system. Sci-Tek’s scope of work for this project includes the following tasks:

Task One – GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

  • Drilled test borings for soil characterization and piezometer installation.
  • Developed Engineer's Logs of the subsurface data obtained using gINT software by Bentley.
  • Collected water level data in the field.

Task Two – SURVEYING AND FIELD INVESTIGATION

  • Topographic Survey
    • Field survey and topographic survey of the existing site conditions and PA One Call System markings
  • Manhole Survey
    • Horizontal locations and vertical elevations of approximately 50 manhole rims
    • Documentation of state plane coordinates and elevation data collected on the manholes
    • Field investigation and internal inspection of manholes

Task Three – SITE EVALUATION OF SEWER FLOW MONITORING SITES

  • Site evaluations of three potential flow monitoring sites.
  • Completion of a site evaluation forms including details on site location, sketch of location and flow in the manhole, hydraulic conditions, flow measurements, access and safety conditions, debris, evidence of surcharge, and flow conditions
