Environmental
From permitting through initial and ongoing compliance, Sci-Tek helps assure that facilities meet regulations imposed by governments and their agencies at all levels. The results are that facilities operate continuously, without interruptions caused by non-compliance.
Whether the site is an industrial brownfield or undeveloped greenfield, Sci-Tek's expertise in environmental site assessment helps our clients eliminate the uncertainties that can lead to unexpected development costs. Sci-Tek has the capability to use the assessment information to develop and execute remediation strategies that protect the environment, meet client needs, and satisfy regulatory requirements. Sci-Tek has licensed professionals and field equipment that can travel to the job site as necessary.
Our environmental services in brief:

Representative Projects:
- Environmental, health, and safety engineering services for the US Department of Energy’s facilities in Pittsburgh, PA and Morgantown, WV
A team of Sci-Tek engineers and scientists reviewed some 65 environmental, health, and safety directives for the US Department of Energy’s facilities at Pittsburgh, PA and Morgantown, WV to merge them into one set of directives for both sites, making them easier and more efficient to manage. The team also assessed mercury levels in an unused lab and recommended the actions needed to return the building to productive use, saving the costs of new construction. In addition, ongoing assessments of selected NETL and ES&H programs were followed by reports that clearly communicated strengths, weaknesses, deficiencies, and recommendations for improvements.
- Assessment and follow-on studies for a site in Pittsburgh being considered for a school
The Pittsburgh Board of Education planned to build a new school on a site that had been contaminated by the former occupants: plating and auto-body shops. Sci-Tek scientists collected soil borings, sampled the groundwater, supervised chemical analyses of soil and water, and reported results, including recommendations for remediation. The contaminated materials were removed, the site obtained an environmental clearance from the state, and the school was built as planned.
- Industrial hygiene monitoring for the Pittsburgh Housing Authority
Pittsburgh’s Housing Authority asked Sci-Tek to provide asbestos, lead-based paint, and other consulting services to assure that various sites meet applicable HUD, EPA, and DEP regulations. Sci-Tek’s scientists and technicians sampled, tested, and analyzed suspect materials, monitored air quality, and summarized their findings to enable remediation to proceed most efficiently and expeditiously.
- Initial and subsequent AHERA investigations for the Veterans Administration
Site surveys, reviews of O&M procedures and costs, IAQ analyses, and much more were included in Sci-Tek’s contract with the Veteran’s Administration for initial and follow-on AHERA investigations of 43 health-care and support buildings on a site in Butler, PA. Sci-Tek completed much of the work in unoccupied buildings, some in occupied buildings as unobtrusively as possible. All samples were analyzed by certified laboratories, sometimes to more than one to assure that the results were accurate. Sci-Tek then wrote technical specifications and helped compile bid packages for abatement.
- Construction oversight and abatement monitoring for the Veterans Administration
The Pittsburgh Veterans Administration contracted with Sci-Tek for a broad range of assessment, abatement, and oversight services at three major facilities. Included were AHERA inspections, various lead and asbestos surveys, and construction oversight support of remediation. The initial contract was extended to include preparation of technical specifications and bidding packages for the abatement of several toxic materials.
- NEPA assessments at Pittsburgh International Airport
The terminal at the former Pittsburgh International Airport needed to be cleared by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act before it could be used for other purposes. Sci-Tek provided the Environmental Assessment for conversion of the building to a business park, coordinating the work closely with several government entities, including the Allegheny County Department of Aviation, the Federal Aviation Administration, the State Historical Preservation Office, and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
